Exhibition: Cockneys in Arcadia; C R Ashbee in Chipping Campden

Friday 7 April – Sunday 9 July

This major exhibition of 2017 curated by experts Alan Crawford and Mary Greensted is the first to showcase C R Ashbee’s Campden period and will include the full range of Ashbee’s work during that time, as a designer of furniture, metalwork, silver, jewellery and printed books.  It will include pieces held by private lenders not seen by the public before.

One-on-One: David Hart 
David Hart is a grandson of George Hart, one of the Guildsmen who came with Ashbee in 1902. He has continued the family tradition of silversmithing and works in the same workshops as his grandfather in the Silk Mill. David will give a personal reflection on the silver displayed in the exhibition.

Talk: CHINA REDISCOVERED
Did you know that the Ancient Chinese pottery discovered by archaeologists in 1911 in Greece influenced ceramic design in the 20/21st century?

George Manginis’s beautifully illustrated talk on his book about the ancient Chinese pottery in the Benaki Museum and the part played by Greek-origin British business man George Eumorfopoulos who inspired modern artists and studio pottery.

George Manginis studied archaeology at the University of Athens. He’s taught Byzantine, Islamic and Chinese Art History at the University of Edinburgh, SOAS, and the New College of The Humanities in London. He was a 2013 Stanley J. Seeger Fellow at Princeton University. His writing includes Mount Sinai: A History of Travellers and Pilgrims.

We are delighted to be supporting this event, part of the Chipping Campden Literature Festival - the Benaki Museum, Athens is the oldest museum in Greece and is great that we can link with them
